There are many things to do on Kodiak, for any kind of budget. Here are just a few of the available activities. Hopefully, it will help you plan
your time here.
Fishing: There are many ways to enjoy fishing in Kodiak, from catching a king salmon to wrestling a halibut. Going on a fishing trip with one of our local
sport fishing charters might be your best bet. Some of the wildlife viewing trips offer fishing as well, or going fishing at one of Kodiaks rivers and catching one of
our smaller fish, salmon or trout. One thing that is important to remember for any fishing you might be planning, is that you will need to get a fishing license.
Hiking and Biking: There are many walking trails for any style you might be looking for: easy, moderate or hard. Abercombie and Near Island are
two of the more popular walking trails, but there are many well travelled roads on the mountains and beaches. There is a Kodiak hiking guide available at the
Visitors Center. Something you might want to consider anytime you plan on going for a long hike alone, is to let somone know where you are going and when
you expect to be back, just in case. You will see many beautiful sights so you might want to bring along a camera.
Recreation: Kodiak has a bowling alley, movie theater, golf course, horseback riding, kayaking, boating, and a teen center.. You can go to one of the
parks, or if you have use of a car, take a driving tour. It might not be hopping like the big cities, but that's one of the reasons Kodiak is so special. Take a break
from the norm, breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the sights Kodiak has to offer.
Bear viewing: There are a few ways to see bears on Kodiak: by airplane, boat, camping and hiking with a guide, I would recommend if you plan on
going bear viewing to make sure to have a local guide who has experience; they know where to find bears, and do it safely. It's an amazing experience, but you
don't want it to turn into a tragedy. Don't go off on your own looking for the bears: it's unsafe for you, and unsafe for the bears.
